Healthy Sleep and Spinal Health: Orthopedic Doctor's Advice
We spend a third of our lives asleep. That time is critical for the body's recovery, for renewing brain function, and for resting the spine.
Choosing the wrong mattress doesn't just cause poor sleep - it can lead to chronic back pain, poor circulation, and even affect your mood.
Five key criteria for choosing the right mattress:
1. Anatomical support: A good mattress should conform to the body's shape while keeping the spine in a straight line. Independent "pocket spring" systems are especially ideal for relieving pressure on the shoulders and hips.
2. Age factor: Firmer mattresses are recommended for children and teenagers, to support correct spinal development. For older adults, softer, more anatomical models that don't put pressure on the joints are recommended instead.
3. Sleeping position: If you mostly sleep on your side, a medium-soft mattress helps your shoulders sink in comfortably; if you sleep on your back or stomach, a medium-firm mattress helps prevent your lower back from sinking too much.
4. Natural materials: For those who sweat during sleep, breathable, natural materials help prevent bacteria and allergens from building up.
5. Support suited to your weight: heavier sleepers generally need a firmer support core to avoid sagging, while lighter sleepers are usually more comfortable on a softer surface.
